Mildred Newman Baldwin, a resident of Burlington who was born in Mebane, passed away on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, at the age of 101. She was a retired nurse from Alamance County Hospital, having served for 28 years. Mildred was a dedicated member of Davis Street United Methodist Church for over six decades, having joined in 1961. There, she served on various boards in the church including President of United Methodist Women and was recognized as Lay Person of the Year in 2013.
In addition to her nursing career and her commitment to her faith community, Mildred was honored as Alamance County Mother of the Year (May, 1995) and was a member of the American War Mothers organization, and a strong supporter of our nation’s veterans. She also generously volunteered her time with Hospice for 28 years, supporting those in need with compassion and kindness.
Mildred's life was marked by a deep dedication to serving others, both professionally and through her volunteer work. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her unwavering faith, and her commitment to making a positive impact in her community.
She is the daughter of the late George E. and Mary Holt Newman and wife of the late Luther William “Bill” Baldwin. She was also preceded in death by her children, Carolyn Allred, Janice Felts, Ellen Roberson and Phillip Baldwin; Siblings, Margaret Ferrell, George E. Newman, Jr. and Richard Newman; granddaughter, Sherri Riley and great grandson, Noah Foley.
Mrs. Baldwin is survived by her children, Kenneth (Nancy) Baldwin of Graham, William Baldwin of Greensboro and Lucy Smith of Liberty; 9 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A graveside service to celebrate her life will be 3:00 PM Monday, at Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington, NC officiated by Rev. David Tessman. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to AuthoraCare Collective (formerly Hospice of Alamance-Caswell), 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
