Dr. Monty Craig Freshwater, 75, of Mebane, NC, passed away on Wednesday August 21, 2019 at the VA Hospital in Durham. A native of Alamance County, NC, he was the son of the late Albert Wesley and Lodie Heath Freshwater. Monty graduated from Mebane High School in 1962 and from North Carolina State University in 1966, Following his college graduation Monty joined the United States Air Force. In the Air Force he trained as a pilot, flying the EC-121R, KC135, and the YQU22A during Vietnam. His time in the Air Force also included a tour as a Weapons Director. Following his time in the Air Force and Vietnam, he graduated from The University of Georgia as a Doctor of Medicine. Once he received his degree from Georgia, he joined the United States ARMY Veterinary Medical Corps in 1983 and served as a US Army Veterinary Officer until his retirement. Retiring as Major in 1997 from the US Army, he then came back home to Mebane where he practiced as a local Veterinarian for many years. Monty loved his fellow veterans, being a member of the Mebane VFW #1920 as well as the American Legion Post #95 in Mebane. He was also a very proud Freemason as member of the Bingham Lodge #272 AF & AM where he served as a Past Master and leader of his Lodge. Monty was also a member of the Scottish Rite as a 32 Degree Mason. Monty attended St. Luke’s United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife Catherine Sykes Freshwater; his daughter, Capt. Shannon F. Long, USAF, and husband Travis; his son, Lt. Col. Brian N. Freshwater, USAF, and wife Terri; grandchildren, Payton Long, Emery Long, and Sophie Freshwater; sisters, Fay Whited and Sue Clark and husband Caudell; brothers, Danny Freshwater and wife Gloria and Wesley Freshwater and wife Sandra and many loving nieces and nephews. A Graveside Service will be held at Mebane Memorial Gardens on Sunday August 25, 2019 with the Pastor Tommy Privette. Military and Masonic Rites will be held at the Graveside. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Saturday August 24, 2019 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice at the Durham VA by visiting www.durham.va.gov or by calling (919) 370-0040. The Bingham Masonic Lodge #272 AF & AM will open Emergent Communication at 12:30 on Sunday.
