On June 14, 2023, Mrs. Neva Ercell Plumley Guthrie, 88, went home to be with her Lord and Savior surrounded by her loving friends and family. Neva was a native of Plumley Mountain, West Virginia and was the daughter of the late William Plumley and Ercell Plumley. Mrs. Guthrie was a woman of great faith and she was active in many organizations in service to the Lord such as Friends of the Gideons, Senior Adult Fellowship at Kinnett Memorial Baptist Church, Crossroads group to assist widows, her Senior Sunday School Class, and occasionally participated in her church’s choir. She will be remembered as a kind soul who never met a stranger, always making friends wherever she went.
In addition to her parents, Neva was preceded in heaven by her husband, Gene R. Guthrie Sr.; her sisters, Gracie Bennet, and Merlene Bailey; her brothers, Kenneth Plumley, and Ira Plumley; and her grandson, Christopher Guthrie.
Mrs. Guthrie is survived by her children, Cheryl Steele (Rick), Billy Guthrie (Melanie), Gene R. “Junior” Guthrie (Darla), Anthony Guthrie, Valeria Schanewolf (Mark), and Lynne Guthrie; her grandchildren, Michael Steele (Katie), Jennifer Boyce (Jon), Brent Guthrie (Susan), Jeremy Guthrie (Amanda), Brooke Guthrie, Taylor Guthrie, Erin Guthrie, Mitchell Guthrie (Solana), Sara Guthrie, Emily Schanewolf, Guthrie Schanewolf, and Joey Bailey; and her great-grandchildren, Hannah Boyce, David Boyce, Patrick Steele, Fletcher Steele, Colton Guthrie, Barrett Guthrie, and Ansley “Rosebud” Guthrie.
The Guthrie family would like to give a special thank you to her caregivers in her time of need, Amanda, Ellen, Janice, Pamela, Meagan, and Peggy.
A funeral service will be held for Mrs. Guthrie on Monday, June 19, 2023, at the McClure Funeral Home in Graham beginning at 1:00PM. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00AM – 12:30PM. Burial will follow the service at Linwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to Gideons International PO Box 422 Graham, NC 27253. The donation will support the Friends of Gideon Bibles to be handed out by The Voices One Missionaries on their mission trips. The Bibles will be handed out in memory of Neva Guthrie, who gave out many Friends of Gideon Bibles in her steadfast effort to witness and praise the Lord.
