Opal Vass Bruner

September 15, 1924 — December 11, 2017

Opal Bruner, 93, passed away on December 11, 2017 at the Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell. She was born September 15, 1924 in Hillsville, Va., to the late Millard Montegue Vass and Artie Jane Jenkins Vass. She graduated from Martin Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in Mt. Airy, NC as an RN. Upon moving to Burlington, she worked at Alamance General Hospital and later retired from Memorial Hospital of Alamance. After retiring her special interests included painting classes, making quilts, crafting projects, water aerobics at YMCA, and participating in activities at Kernodle Senior Center. She is survived by three daughters; Janie King, Peggy Fogleman (Harold), and Linda Bruner, four grandchildren; Kelley Herndon (Ron), Betsy Reams (Joe), Julie Ollis (Gary) and Katy Harrelson (John Henry), eight great-grandchildren; Avery and Ramsey Herndon, Hannah Parnell, Zack Ollis, Alex and Zoe Reams, Lily and Maggie Harrelson, two sisters; Wynona Hill and Patsy Coulson. Other than her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Winfred W. Bruner, two sisters; Mary Alice Marshall and Dorothy Carol Walker, brother; John Montegue Vass, grandson; Jason Douglass Wood, and son in-law Rickey Gene Overman. A funeral service will be held on Thursday December 14, 2017 at 2:00pm in the McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham with Pastor Bennie Smith officaiting. The family will receive friends from 1-2 on Thursday prior to the service at the funeral home and at other times at the residence of the daughter Peggy B. Fogleman. Burial will follow at Pine Hill Cemetery in Burlington. The family would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to long-time companion and caregiver, Linda Livingston. Also a special thanks to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell and to dedicated caregivers, Karen Patterson, Kimberly Williams, Renee Graves, NiArah Brown and Angela Leath.
