Peggy Jean McCarthy Forbes peacefully passed away on July 9th at 2:00 AM. She was 86 years young and was retired from the Alamance Burlington School System where she spent many years as a teacher assistant at South Graham Elementary. In later years, she served as “Resident Grandma” to countless children at North Graham Elementary where she volunteered. Her friends and family were her life. She loved music and all of the arts and entertained audiences with her harmonica. She loved storytelling and poetry and delighted many with her own personal poems. She enjoyed birds, flowers, and traveling to Ireland. Her home was always open to everyone, young and old, and from all walks of life. She was especially loved and will be missed by her children, Lois Forbes Dixon (Todd), Harry Forbes (Carol Ann), and Jane Forbes Hochreiter (Philip), grandchildren, Starr Benson John (Chris), Benjamin Dixon, Zac Lassiter, Isa van der Drift, Robert van der Drift, and great grandchild, Ivy John. She was blessed to be one of 11 children and is survived by Catherine Barbour, Jane Hardy (Wright), and Larry McCarthy (Nancy), along with numerous much loved nieces and nephews. A celebration of her life will be held at Hebron United Methodist Church in Mebane at 3:00 PM, on Saturday, July 11th. Visitation will be held prior to the service at 1:00 PM. The family will be at the residence of Jane Hochreiter at other times. Memorials may be made to Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org) or to the Graham Middle School Chorus, 311 E. Pine St., Graham, NC 27253.
