Roy Hill Elgin

July 31, 1944 — January 2, 2016

Obituary for Roy Hill Elgin Roy Hill Elgin passed away on Saturday, January 2016 at his home. He was born in Burlington, North Carolina on July 31, 1944 and was the son of Guy Elgin, Jr. and Sallie Doss Elgin. He married his sweetheart, Sharon Ellington Elgin on November 16, 1963. Their marriage thrived for 52 years. They were blessed with two children, Richard Guy Elgin of Waxhaw, NC and Cameron Elgin Carlton of Greensboro, NC. Roy grew up in Burlington and graduated from Western Alamance High School in 1963. He went on to graduate from Elon Collage in 1976 with his Bachelor’s degree in Social Science. Roy served with the Burlington Police Department for 13 faithful years. He was named Police Officer of the year in 1968. Roy was one of the first police officers to earn a college degree as well as to receive the Advanced Law Enforcement Certification. He was a founding member of the City-County Vice Unit and the first leader of the Police Explorers Scout troop. Roy started his career in the private sector in 1977 by pursuing a career in sales and marketing with Gardisette USA and later with Regal Textile. He was also founder and President of Classic Performance and Restoration (CPR) Inc. Roy was always a fan of fast and good looking cars. Roy served as President of the Queen City Corvette Club of Charlotte in 1980 and 1991. In 1993 Roy and Sharon moved back to Burlington, NC to care for ailing parents. Roy went to work for Alamance County Child Support Enforcement. He was the first agent to collect 1 million dollars in one year. He worked with several committees to perfect the ACTS program when Child Support Enforcement was automated. In his years with Child Support Enforcement he served as a supervisor of the Enforcement Unit and he had a toy box in his office for the good boys and girls to choose a toy. In August, 2011 Roy retired from Alamance County Child Support to a life of rest and relaxation. July, 2014 Sharon joined him in retirement and the two embarked upon several new activities. Together they served as volunteers for Alamance County Meals on Wheels and began a new hobby of stained glass at Alamance County Community College. Roy was a 9th grade drop out with no future and ended his life with two college degrees, state and local honors, and a great family, of which he was very proud. He was always ready to encourage anyone to better themselves and reminded them that they can do anything by just working hard and doing it! He believed God gave us all the ability to succeed; we only have to do it. Roy was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Margret Gusler and husband Noel (Gus) Gusler and Gladys Hinson of Burlington, NC and Arizonian (Zonie) Compton and husband Charlie of Graham, NC. He is survived by his wife, Sharon Ellington Elgin, of the home; his son Richard (Rick) Guy Elgin and wife, Cheryl, granddaughters Jordan, Bailey and Olivia and great granddaughter Adyson, all of Waxhaw, NC; his daughter Cameron Elgin Carlton and husband Mark and grandson Jacob of Greensboro, NC. Family will receive friends and family for visitation at Mc Clure Funeral Home in Graham, NC on Wednesday, January 6th from 6-8pm and the funeral service will be the following day on Thursday at 2pm in the funeral home chapel.
