Rupert "Max" Maxwell Butler

Rupert Maxwell Butler of Mebane, known affectionately to family and friends as Max, passed away on August 15, 2026, in Alamance County, North Carolina, at the age of 87. Born on November 17, 1938, in Halifax County, Virginia, he lived a life marked by devotion, hard work, and a deep love for the people and places that shaped him. Max was the beloved husband of Penny Bartis Butler for 65 wonderful years, and their marriage stood as a lasting example of commitment and partnership. Together, they built a family that was the center of his world. He is survived by his daughter, Stephany Butler Thomas, and her husband, Scott; his son, Yonnie Dean Butler, and his wife, Judy; his grandchildren, Katie Lynn Thomas, Heather Thomas Guthrie and her husband, Luke, John James “Jamie” Joseph, II and his wife, Rachel, and Jordan Joseph Henderson and her husband, Justin; and his eight loving great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind many other loving nieces, nephews, and extended family members who will cherish his memory always. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rupert T. Butler and Sarah Lacy Butler, and by his brother, Wayne Lacy Butler. Their memories remained close to his heart throughout his life, and he carried forward the values of family, loyalty, and perseverance that they instilled in him. Max graduated from Walter Williams High School in 1958, where he was a proud member of the school band. Even as a boy, he showed a spirit of service and teamwork through his involvement in the Boy Scouts. These early experiences helped shape the dependable and disciplined man he became. He went on to build a respected career as a master mechanic, working with Associated Transport, Amick Ford, Stearns Ford, County Ford, and Carolina Truck Lines. His skill, dedication, and strong work ethic earned the respect of those who worked alongside him and those who relied on him. Faith was an important part of Max’s life, and he was a member of Mebane United Methodist Church, where he served as an usher and participated in the Men’s Club. As s a young man he was Baptized at Grove Park Baptist Church. He valued fellowship and community, and he gave his time generously to organizations and events that brought people together. He was a past member of the Kiwanis Club and the Burlington Moose Lodge, and he took great pride in leading the Mebane Dogwood Festival Car Show for many years. His enthusiasm and commitment helped make the event a cherished tradition. Max had a lifelong love for motorcycles and antique cars, and he especially enjoyed sharing those interests with others. He looked forward to trips to Ace Speedway with family and friends, where he found joy in the excitement and companionship of the day. He also treasured beach trips, playing golf with friends, and line dancing with Penny, moments that reflected his fun-loving spirit and appreciation for life’s simple pleasures. Those who knew Max will remember him as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He was a man of integrity, warmth, and steady kindness, and he leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication that will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday August 20, 2026, at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane with Chaplain David Grinnell officiating. Burial will follow at Hawfields Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 Until 7:00 PM on Wednesday August 19, 2026, at McClure in Mebane and other times at the residence of the family. Casual attire is requested by the family.
