Ruth “Addie” Hazel, 55, went home to be with the Lord on January 18, 2018, after a nearly ten-year struggle with cancer. A devoted mother and wife, she was the daughter of the late Henry and Nettie Bowden. She was a member of Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church in the Pleasant Grove Community, but also attended services at Bethsada Baptist Church in the Oaks Community. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter and husband, particularly to the North Carolina Mountains, or to the Outer Banks. She was a talented photographer, and loved taking pictures of her daughter as the family traveled to various places. Her brothers and sister, nieces and nephews held a precious place in her heart, and she was always happy to be able to spend time with them. In spite of her illness, she maintained a cheerful disposition and a strong faith in her eternal salvation, continuing to encourage those she met at Duke who were undergoing similar struggles. Survivors include her husband, Forest Hazel, daughter; Colleen Hazel, son; Thomas Hazel, sister; Vickie Merritt (Thomas), brothers; Keith Bowden (Cheryl), David Bowden (Dianne), Terry Bowden (Shelia) and Milton Bowden. Other than her parents she was preceded in death by a sister Shelia Nickerson and a brother Henry Bowden. Public viewing will be held on Monday January 22, 2018 from 1pm-8pm at McClure Funeral and Cremation Service in Mebane. A funeral service will be held at 11:00am at Martin’s Chapel Baptist Church on Tuesday January 23, 2018. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
