Shirley Layell Gurkin

Mrs. Shirley Elizabeth Layell Gurkin, 68, of Graham, NC passed away on Tuesday February 16, 2016 at Alamance Regional Medical Center. A native of Surry County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Garvey Dalton Layell and Ola Pruitt Layell. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many. Her dog Ginger was her life and her joy along with her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading and writing poetry and she was an avid cook and recipe collector. She volunteered with the Salvation Army and was always willing to help others. Survivors include her children, Kim Gurkin, Tim Gurkin, Tammy Stockard, Kristi Sizemore, Sherri Gurkin and Steven Gurkin; grandchildren, Shannon Gurkin, Chantal Gurkin, Nicholas Stockard, Kris Collins, Kayla Sizemore, Cheyanne Collins, Christian Evans, Charles Gurkin, Noah Hunter, and Ethan Gurkin; great grandchild, Aubree Gurkin and brother, Wayne Layell. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Leonard Gurkin. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday February 20, 2016 at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.
