Vernon Merit Cheek Jr., 77, of Mebane, died Sunday December 10, 2017. He was born July 9, 1940 to the late Vernon Merit Cheek Sr. and Ruby Johnson Cheek of Haw River, NC. A graduate of Elon University, he taught Accounting for 35+ years at Alamance Community College. He taught Sunday School, was the Church Treasurer for 25 years, a member of the Methodist Men’s Club, and served on various committees at Hebron United Methodist Church. He loved watching and supporting his favorite sports teams, Duke University and Eastern Alamance High School. He is survived by his high school sweetheart, Margaret Phillips Cheek, to whom he was married for 57 years. He is also survived by sons, Mike Cheek and Doug (Susan) Cheek of Mebane; four grandchildren, Travis, Hali, Maggie, and Matthew Cheek; four great-grandchildren and sister in-law, Barbara Ford Cheek of Burlington. He was preceded in death by his brother, Joseph Mitchell Cheek. A service to celebrate his life will be held at 11am Wednesday December 13, 2017 at Hebron United Methodist Church, Mebane, by Rev. Clarence Toney. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship building immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to the Vernon Cheek Accounting Scholarship at Alamance Community College or to Hospice and Palliative Care Center of Alamance-Caswell. The family would like to thank the staff at Blakey Hall and Brookdale Memory Care, especially his sweet friend, Mary.
