W. Morris Thompson

September 15, 1945 — January 5, 2018

Mr. W. Morris Thompson, 72, of Chapel Hill, NC, passed away on Friday January 5, 2018 at his residence. A native of Orange County, NC, he was the son of the late Willie Moore and Pansy Turner Thompson. Morris was the owner and operator of Thompson Tractor Repair for over 40 years and was a lifelong farmer raising cattle and cutting hay. He was a Past President and Chaplain of the South Orange Camp of the Gideon’s International which he had worked and loved for numerous years. Morris was a proud veteran of the US Army and was a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church in Hillsborough. He was known for being a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend to many. Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Sarah Womble Thompson, of the home; daughter, Joy T. Gravitte and husband Jeff, of Hillsborough; sons, Payton Thompson and wife Julie, of Durham and Mason Thompson and wife Beth, of Chapel Hill; grandchildren, Holly McCombs, Blake Thompson, Grant Thompson, Lindsay and Leah Thompson, Jacob Gravitte, Braedon Thompson, Sydney Thompson and Joel Gravitte; great grandson, William McCombs; sister, Lynette Thompson, of Hillsborough; brother, Norman Thompson and wife Lisa, of Hillsborough and many loving nieces, nephews, sister in law and brother in law. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Willie Jean Kirk and Judy Wagoner and a brother, Adron Thompson. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday January 8, 2018 at the Cross Roads Baptist Church in Hillsborough with the Pastors Bruce Brown and David Bolick officiating. Burial will be held in the Church Cemetery with Military Honors. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 PM on Sunday January 7, 2018 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane and other times at the residence of the family.
