Walter Lee Caviness, Jr.

December 4, 1936 — May 7, 2021

Hillsborough

Walter Lee “Jake” Caviness, 84, passed unexpectedly on May 7, 2021, near his home in Hillsborough, NC.

Jake spent a lifetime taking care of others.  As he cared for his wife Betty, he always made time for his children, grandchildren, family, friends and neighbors.  He was always there to make anyone’s day better. No one was a stranger to him.  He was an Army veteran, baseball player and fan (Go Braves!), fisherman, shag dancer extraordinaire, master griller, and awesome granddad.  Jake was a Renaissance man who set the bar high for the rest of us.

He loved the outdoors.  Whether planting tomatoes in the spring or irises in the fall, he could be found outside most days.  His happy place was at the coast with a fishing pole in his hand.  When it came to sports, he loved all the teams in the ACC, but it was suspected that he was a closet UNC fan.  We still loved him.

Jake loved spending Friday nights dancing with Betty at the Burlington Shag Club.  The friendships formed there became his foundation of love and support.  Some of his best memories were with his shag community at Myrtle Beach.

His love for his children and grandchildren was vast.  So many games, school functions, dance recitals and events and he enjoyed all of them. He was so excited about Ashley and Zach’s upcoming graduations from college. Jake was the epitome of the proud grandparent.

He is survived by Wife, Grace Elizabeth “Betty” Caviness of the home; Children, Walter Lee Caviness III 0f Raleigh and Elizabeth Ann Caviness Williams and husband Richard of Cary; Grandchildren, Zachary Steven Williams & Ashley Elizabeth Williams; Sister, Susan Caviness Rayle & Husband Doug of Graham Niece and nephew

Jake is preceded in death by parents, Walter Lee & Edna Earle Caudle Caviness
