William Paul Cook

November 10, 1929 — January 31, 2018

William Paul Cook, 88, passed away peacefully Wednesday January 31, 2018 at The Oaks at Mayview after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. Paul was born on November 10, 1929 to Newman Tate Cook and Gladys Thompson Cook, and was raised in the Hebron/Orange Grove communities. Tate passed when Paul was a young teen and he was later blessed with a “stepdaddy”, William Manley Snipes, fondly known as Daddy Manley. Paul often reminisced about what a good role model Manley was to him. He allowed Paul to learn by example on the dairy farm which led Paul in dairy farming after graduation from Mebane High School. Paul later enlisted in the US Army in 1954 and received an honorable discharge in 1956. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and a Good Conduct Medal. Eventually he was led into law enforcement with the North Carolina ABC division and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Paul retired as Chief Deputy in 1987 after 29 years of dedicated service. Paul is survived by his wife of 39 years, Doris S. Cook of the home; one daughter Paula Cook Williams Oakley (Tom); two sisters: Jeanie C. Sturdivant of Carrboro, Helen C. Whitt of Chapel Hill; one step-sister Marybelle S. Kirk of Hillsborough; three grandchildren: Megan W. Stanford (Alex) of Hillsborough, Melyssa W. Daulton (Seth), Jeffrey F. Williams, Joshua P. Oakley, and Sean T. Oakley of Graham; three great grandchildren: William A. and Hunter R. Stanford and Andrew W. Daulton. Paul was preceded in death by his father Newman Tate Cook; his mother Gladys Thompson Snipes; step father William Manley Snipes; step-sisters Frances S. Freeman and Ella S. Lloyd. A funeral service will be held Saturday February 3, 2018 at 1 pm at Chestnut Ridge United Methodist Church in Efland, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.
