Winifred Marie (Carpenter) Miller went home to be with the Lord peacefully at home with her
family by her side at 6:30 am on December 29, 2021 after a valiant fight with Alzheimer’s
disease. She was born on November 17th, 1938 in Guys Mills, PA to Ellen Sarah (Proper)
Carpenter and Louis Welcome Carpenter who preceded her in death. She was also preceded
in death by her brother Louie Carpenter Jr and Elsa (Carpenter) Holbrook. She is survived by
her oldest sister, Helen (Carpenter) Pierce and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved.
Winnie, as she liked to be called, was the loving wife and traveling companion of Richard
Eugene Miller for 67 years and his sweetheart for a total of 70 years.
We met in January 1953 as I was selling tickets for the Sr High basketball game. A reporter
for the school paper, which I was editor of, bought tickets and had a dazzling girl with her. As
soon as possible I got introduced to the girl, her younger sister. Shortly afterward we began to
date. I found that she was a devoted Christian and through her testimony I became a Christian
also. That was a firm condition for her acceptance of my courtship. It was my last semester to
graduate and the end of her ninth grade. We were thoroughly smitten. To provide for her I
enlisted in the US Air Force. After completing my Training in 1954 I accepted a duty assignment
in Mountain Home Idaho. Winnie became my mail order bride. I asked for permission to marry
her and sent her parents a train ticket to travel to Mountain Home and marry me at the First
Baptist Church.. She came, we did and God has blessed our lives unbelievably ever since.
Thousands of miles of travel, fantastic adventures, unbelievable protection by our Savior, to our
thinking riches beyond belief. Air Force, IBM, Billy Graham Crusades, Youth Ministry, College,
Church Ministry, Retirement , Winnie, like a true warrior deeply immersed in the thick of every bit
of it. At my side, often leading, she has been My Wonder Woman. She leaves an unbelievable
void. As I snuggled beside her Holding her Hand as she took one last small breath, I had to say
Glory to God She is Home! No more wild adventures with this crazy man, Basking in peace in
her Savior’s kingdom! Hallelujah!
Winnie was a devoted mother, and to know her, was to know love and kindness. She taught
everyone, especially her children, how to faithfully follow Jesus by her example. She raised 3
children in the fear and admonition of the Lord: Ronald Edward Miller of Mebane, Deborah
(Drew) Provencher of Pennsylvania and Janet (John) Triola of Graham. She was blessed with 7
grandchildren whom she adored: Jonathan, David, Hannah, Stephen, Janelle, Jessica and
Jeremiah and 7 great-grandchildren: Brittany, Samuel, Norah, Lila, Emma, Anivia and Gianna.
Winnie was compassionate, with a true servant’s heart. She was always bringing gifts to new
neighbors, and food to the sick or grieving. She had an incredible sense of humor. Anyone who
ever met her, loved her. She was never too tired or too busy to help others. She always had a
listening ear and a word of wisdom to give anyone who was hurting. The world is a lonelier
place without her smiling face.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Piedmont Rescue Mission’s Women and Children’s
Shelter in her honor.

Celebration of Life will be Monday January 3rd at 3pm at Tabernacle Baptist Church 523 N
