Betty Brooks Obituary

Betty Jo Brooks, 86, of Graham died and entered the Church Triumphant on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 at the Homeplace of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John David and Nettie Viola Cartwright Hurlocker; her first husband Kenneth G. Jeffreys and her second husband, W.L. Brooks; daughter, Sherry Lee Jeffreys; sisters, Faye H. Patton, Margaret H. Squires and Ruby H. Taylor; brothers, Wallace Hurlocker and John David Hurlocker, Jr.; half-brother, Alex Dawkins.

She is survived by her sons, Victor Jeffreys and wife Minerva of Burlington, Blaine Jeffreys of Mebane, David Jeffreys and wife Julie of Roxboro, Scott Jeffreys and wife Malia of Statesville; sister, Arlene Brooks and husband Wayne of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Brooks was a lifelong resident of Alamance county and in her younger years she was co-owner PlayMart and Jefgo Toy stores. She also worked for several years at Ralph Scott Group homes as a house parent, and in her later years she was employed at Belk Department store.

She was an industrious and frugal woman of deep conviction and personal integrity. She was a defender of the defenseless and did her best to stand up for what was right. A black headed beauty, she was a woman of natural born rhythm who played beautiful country piano by ear and who could two-step, three-step, shag, hustle, waltz, and samba better than any contestant on Dancing With The Stars. (none of her slue-foot sons inherited this gift) She loved her family, joyously made a hot breakfast every morning for her children, and her scrambled eggs and homemade banana pudding were second to none.

Betty Jo was a sinner saved by the grace of God through the life, death, and resurrection of God’s eternal and only begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

The family would like to thank Homeplace of Burlington for the loving care they gave our mother these last two years of her life. We would also like to thank the godly congregation of Northside Presbyterian church and pastor Jim for the sweet gospel fellowship, preaching, and teaching offered to our mother in the last five years of her life.

We give thanks to God for Mrs. Brooks life, her feisty spirit, and the joy and friendship she brought to us all, and we are most grateful that “in life and in death we belong not to ourselves, but to our faithful Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” She is now with God in His eternal Kingdom and reunited with her beloved daughter Sherry Lee, who died at the age of three. “Weeping may endure for the night but joy cometh in the morning.” – Psalm 30:5

A service to celebrate her life will be held at 2:30 pm Tuesday at Northside Presbyterian Church by Rev. Jim Mitchell. Burial will follow in Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the Church from 1:00 – 2:15 Tuesday before the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northside Presbyterian Church, 1805 Vaughn Road, Burlington, NC 27217 or to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance/Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Road, Burlington, NC 27215.
