Thomas “Tommy” McAdams Holmes, Sr. passed away Friday, November 11, 2022 at his home. He was born at home, to the late Samuel Eugene and Nannie McAdams Holmes. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years Betty Bivins Holmes, his sisters Ruth Patton and Margaret Holmes White and his brother, Jim Holmes.
Tommy graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1961 and went on to work many years with Winn Dixie Stores. After his retirement, he started another career at the University of North Carolina, with Health and Safety as a fire inspector, until his retirement in 2006.
Tommy was born and raised in Orange County, in the Orange Grove community. He had a deep-rooted love for his church and community. His passion was his service on the Orange Grove Volunteer Fire Department, where he served 47 years, 26 of those as fire chief and a member of the Board of Directors. He was a member of Cane Creek Baptist Church for many years where he had served as a Deacon.
Mr. Holmes is survived by his three children, Tommy Jr, and wife Kelly, Kim and husband Ray, and James and wife Suzanne; Grandchildren, Thomas, Justin and Toby Holmes, Chris and Taylor Daniel, Dresden and Beau Holmes and Great Grandchildren, Jase Landis, Raelynn and Landon Holmes. Also survived by his brother, Fletcher Holmes, and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive visitors Friday, November 18, from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church, 6901 Orange Grove Rd. Hillsborough, with service on Saturday, November 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Cane Creek Baptist Church. Officiating will be Dr. Michael Ramsey. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.
