David Ralph Payne, 68, passed away Monday, June 13, 2022, at Embrace Hospice of Myrtle Beach, SC. Born November 14, 1953, he was adopted eagerly by Ralph and Faye Payne from the Children’s Home Society of North Carolina on January 27, 1954. He grew up and lived as an adult in Alamance County. As a teenager, David achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and was inducted into the Order of the Arrow honor society. Before his retirement in 2017 he worked as a Detention Officer for the Alamance County Sheriff’s Department. David found joy working with anything mechanical and could repair almost any engine. He could often determine what was wrong with an engine by simply listening to the running (or coughing) motor. From a young age he enjoyed cars, motorcycles, trucks, tractors, and ski boats; and owned an assortment of such vehicles at any given time, keeping them in pristine condition. He may have been as proud of the way they looked as the way they performed, and he shared that love with his son, Jason.  His home in Haw River was similarly maintained and provided him with peace and good memories. David also had a deep affection for animals. Rescuing and training many pets throughout the years, he especially enjoyed his German shepherd, Boy. David made friends easily and was willing to help anyone in need. He was a member of the Mason’s Bingham Lodge #272, the Amran Temple of Raleigh and the Burlington Shriners. He participated in many of their activities, particularly enjoying the fundraisers for the Shriners Hospitals for Children. David was very proud of his Shriners membership and the close friendships he made through the organization. He took special pride in the beautiful window he and his company, Ho-Pa, had installed in the Burlington Shriners’ Clubhouse. Predeceased by his wife, Janice Coleman Payne, and his father, William Ralph Payne, David is survived by his mother, Faye Payne Alexander, son, Jason (Crystal) Payne, and stepson, Scott Walker; grandchildren, Jace Walker and Taryn and Tyler Payne; sister Louisa Payne Allen; nephew Carr (Madison) Allen and their children, Ellis and Owen; and niece, Amy Allen. David received a double lung transplant on April 4, 2021. He was incredibly appreciative of the life-saving gift from his donor, as well as the tireless efforts of the teams at UNC Hospitals with whom he worked closely before and after the transplant surgery. The family would like to express their appreciation to Karen Hamilton who loyally helped David throughout the transplant process and recovery. We would also like to thank the management and staff of the Sea Captain’s House of Myrtle Beach for graciously hosting David and a few friends on Friday evening before he entered Hospice care.  A memorable evening for each of us, David especially enjoyed it. A memorial service to celebrate David’s life will be held at 2pm on Saturday June 18, 2022 at the McClure Funeral Home Chapel, 1030 South Main Street, Graham, with burial at a later date at Pine Hill Cemetery, Burlington. Visitation will be held before the service on Saturday from 12-2 at the funeral home.  Online condolences may be made to www.mcclurefuneralservices.net. Memorial contributions may be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children (Greenville, SC campus), Attn: Processing Center, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394.
