Dolores Valdez of Mebane, NC passed away early Wednesday morning, March 22, 2023. She was the eldest daughter of Ignacio and Maria Antonia Cotto. The second of seven children, Dolores is now reunited with her siblings, Louis, Elsa, Mary, Vicky, Hilda, and Ignacio Jr. She'll be greeted in heaven by the love of her life, Eddie Valdez, who has been waiting to sing "Be My Love" to her again and don the uniform she'll bring to him.
Dolores was lovingly known as "Auntie Dodo" by her many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews. Her favorite author was Taylor Caldwell and, in her youth, she swam so beautifully at summer camp she was compared to Esther Williams by the camp counselor who used a boat to keep up with her as she swam across the lake. Dolores was a Scrabble champion who scored many victories against the computer and a multi-dimensional woman who worked as an accountant, saw herself reflected in the Renoir painting "Two Sisters", learned how to cook pasteles from her mother, and named two of her dogs Dixie.
At 93, Dolores could recall with ease events of her life that had happened 80 years prior including her trip form Puerto Rico to New York on the SS San Jacinto, which was soon after sunk by a German U-boat during WWII. She resided with her beloved niece Carol and their dog "Joy" who Dolores often shared cookies with at the kitchen table.
