Gurney Lee Doby

Gurney Lee Doby, 88, of Mebane passed away Saturday, January 23, 2021 at UNC Chapel Hill hospital. Gurney was born in Pennsylvania County, Virginia, to W.P. Doby and Nela Stanley Doby, both deceased. Gurney was a retired furniture maker; he spent his working years employed at White’s Furniture. Mr. Doby can be remembered as an easy-going man, agreeing with any and everything he was approached with. Gurney carried love in his heart for many things including wood working and going fishing almost any chance he got. These things meant a lot to Gurney but none surpassed the love he had in his heart for his family. He expressed this love through his wood working sometimes making furniture and birdhouses for family members that are still used to this day and will be for years to come.

Gurney is survived by his wife, Mary Hill Doby, his daughter, Sandra Diane Doby, two grandchildren, Michael Doby & April Moyer, four great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

Mr. Doby was preceded in death by a son, Mike Doby Sr.

A graveside service to celebrate the life of Gurney will be held at 2:00 P.M on Wednesday, January 27, 2021, at Oakwood Cemetery.

Mr. Doby will be open for viewing for family and friends to pay their respects Wednesday morning from 9AM-12PM.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
