Mrs. Katie Sue Byrd 88, of Mebane NC passed away on January 21, 2023 at her residence. A native of Orange Co. NC she was the daughter of the late Sutton and Verna Byrd. Katie was retired from SCI with numerous years of service. She was the manager of Pine Ridge Pool that opened in 1975 and spent many years looking after and caring for the pool grounds. She was a member of Mt. Zion Christian Church where over the years she served as the Church Secretary and Treasurer and served on numerous boards and committees. She loved her church and church family but she had a special love and responsibility for taking care of the grounds at the Church Cemetery. Over the years she enjoyed doing her yardwork, tending her garden and she was known as a master of delegating responsibility so it would hopefully rub off on others. For many years she was an Election Judge with the Orange County Board of Elections which she was so honored to do. Katie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend but nothing put a smile on her face like her great grandchildren. Survivors include her loving daughter, Susan Byrd Johnson; a daughter-in-law, Debbie Carter Byrd; her grandchildren, Bryant Byrd, Kyle Johnson and wife Katie, and Taylor Johnson; her great grandchildren which was the apple of her eye, Kennedy, Blair, and Kloie; and a sister, Bessie Moore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ira Byrd; a son, Larry Byrd; a grandson, Nicholas Byrd; and her sister, Shirley Hughes. A funeral service will be held at 3:00 PM on Friday January 27, 2023 at Mt. Zion Christian Church with the Pastor Rick Webster officiating. Burial will follow alongside her husband, Ira in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM on Thursday January 26, 2023 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane and other times at the residence of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Zion Christian Church Cemetery Fun at 3210 Mt. Zion Christian Church Rd. Mebane, NC 27302 or to the AthuraCare Hospice at 918 Chapel Hill Rd.
