Marion Payne Obituary

Marion Colleen Oakley Payne passed away surrounded by her family at her home in Mebane NC on Saturday, July 4, 2020 after a brief illness. “Dink,” as many people called her, was born In Mebane to Jesse and Carrie Cheek Oakley on October 18,1930. She was a happy, energetic, and sometimes mischievous child. She graduated from Mebane High School in 1948 and married her former classmate Herbert Payne on April 1, 1949. While she was in high school, she worked part-time at Baker Cammack Hosiery Mill and Rose’s Dime Store in downtown Mebane. After her marriage she and Herbert worked for many years at Western Electric in Burlington and Winston-Salem. Colleen had a zest for life and enjoyed being with her family and friends. For 34 years she went on an annual beach trip with her extended family. She loved children, television (she and Herbert were among the first people in Mebane to buy a television set when it first came to town in the late 1940s) and a good joke (ribald or clean). She never met a stranger. She was an active and long-time member of Mebane United Methodist Church, the Esther/Willing Workers Circle, the Friendly Garden Club and the Mebane Historical Society. Colleen also volunteered for many local organizations and committees. A good mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she was also a dedicated and loving caregiver when her parents or other family members were ill or disabled. Colleen was preceded in death by her parents, both in 1989, as well as an infant sister (Exie Mae), her brother Billy Tyson Oakley, her sister Velma Kelly and her son-in-law Scott Lance. In addition to her husband of 71 years, she is also survived by daughters Diana Lance and Kay Hendricks; four grandchildren, Travis Hackney (Tina), Crystal Edwards (Joe), Dustin Bradsher, and Dylan Hendricks (Chelsea); five great-grandchildren, Mason Hackney, Hunter Hackney, Emma Hackney, Makala Moore and Oakley Hendricks. She is also survived by her brother Ron Oakley (Kathy). The funeral service will be held at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane on Tuesday, July 7, 2020 at 2:00 PM. Officiating will be Rev. Darrell Moser. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery. Visitation for Mrs. Payne will be from 11:30- AM until 1:30 PM prior to the service.
