Ralph Scott, Jr. Obituary

Ralph “Henderson” Scott, Jr.

Ralph “Henderson” Scott, Jr. 91, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2021 at Compass Healthcare and Rehab, Hawfields following several months of failing health.  He was the son of the late Senator Ralph Henderson Scott, Sr. and Hazeleene Tate Scott.  He was also preceded in death by his sister, Miriam Scott Mayo and Hilda White Scott, the mother of his five children.  Henderson is survived by his brother, William C. Scott, Sr. (Linda), five children:  Betsy Winborne, Carolyn White (Michael), Ralph Scott, III (Heide), Marie Amon (Mark), Nancy Davis (Bobby), eight grandchildren and one great grandchild. Following his graduation from NC State University in Dairy Sciences, he served in the US Army in Germany achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.  He then returned to Alamance County in 1954 to help operate Melville Dairy alongside his father and brother.  In the late 1960’s, as President of the newly established Melville Plastics, Henderson helped pioneer the development of polyethylene resin for use in manufacturing plastic containers.  He was a lifelong member of Hawfields Presbyterian Church, serving as Elder, Sunday School Teacher, and member of countless boards and committees.

It was a common site during the summer months to see Henderson on his tractor bush hogging many of Hawfields common areas.  He loved for neighbors to visit him at his Burnt Shops office followed by their enjoying lunch together.  A quiet, humble man who appreciated hard work and the red soil of the Hawfields Community, he will be interred at the Hawfields Presbyterian Church cemetery in the family plot during a private service to be held at a later date.

His family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the current and former administrations and nursing staff at Compass Healthcare (formerly Presbyterian Home of Hawfields) for their care and friendship to Henderson during his ten years there as an independent resident and as a Member of the Board of Directions.  Special thanks are extended to Valerie Woods at Compass Healthcare who provided Henderson with his favorite snacks and many moments of lighthearted conversation during the sometimes lonely days of the COVID pandemic.

Memorial contributions may be made in Henderson’s memory to Hawfields Presbyterian Church, 2115 NC Hwy 119, Mebane, NC  27302 or Alamance Community College Foundation, 1247 Jimmy Kerr Road, Graham, NC  27253
