William Edward Eynon Jr. (“Bill”), age 77, of Mebane, NC, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by loved ones on March 8, 2022, from liver cancer. Bill was born January 14, 1945, in Youngstown, Ohio, to William Edward Eynon Sr. and Edna Grace (Newcomb) Eynon.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents, and his sister, Pauline Eynon. He is survived by his wife, Susan (Cotton) Eynon, of Mebane, NC; his son, William Edward Eynon III, of Mebane, NC; his daughter and her spouse, Bethan Eynon and Jonathan Crawford, of Chapel Hill, NC; and his beloved West Highland Terrier, Lilly.
Bill worked for 28 years at Canfield Presbyterian Church in Canfield, Ohio. During that time, he was on numerous local and regional committees and oversaw church operations, from making coffee to handling the finances. Well-known for his joking nature, meticulous recordkeeping, and talent at problem solving, he loved serving the congregation and his community. He helped launch a community bible school program, volunteered with the local schools, and was a lifetime member of the Youngstown State University Alumni Club.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1966 and served in Germany and Vietnam during the Vietnam War. After returning home, he worked for GM McKelvy’s department store (later Higbees) for a decade. He earned a teaching degree and substitute taught for a brief time, and then found his passion working for the church. He and Sue celebrated 50 years of marriage in June 2021. After retirement, his favorite hobby became gardening, and he was known for his green thumb and vegetables each summer. He moved to Mebane, NC, with his wife and son in 2017, to be closer to family.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, May 1, 2022, at Hawfields Presbyterian Church in Mebane, NC, where he was a member. Pastor David Ealy will officiate.
