Mr. Wm. Rowen Grant Jr. 89, of Mebane, NC formerly of Southampton, PA,
passed away on Thursday January 6, 2022 at the Durham VA Medical Center.
Rowen was the son of the late Wm. Rowen Grant Sr. and Violette Smith Grant.
Rowen graduated from the University of Pennsylvania and then continued his
education at Eckels College of Funeral Service in Philadelphia. Rowen was a true
“Funeral Man” as he was a 4th generation funeral director in his family. Wm.
Rowen Grant Funeral Home which his great grandfather started on Girard Avenue in Philadelphia, PA
dates back to the 1870’s and the current location is a historic site in Southampton, PA to this day.
Following his retirement, he then moved to North Carolina to be with family and
worked with McClure Funeral Service in Graham and Mebane, NC for many
years as a funeral director and lay minister. Rowen was a proud veteran of the
US Army serving as a 1st Lieutenant during the Korean War and was a past chaplain
for the Mebane American Legion Post 95.
He was also a member of the Newtown Masonic Lodge #427 AF&AM. Rowen
loved the Lord and his Church family at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Hillsborough, NC where he
was always willing to lend a hand where needed, especially in the historic church yard.
He was an active Rotarian in PA, and a member of the Hillsborough Exchange Club.
His stories and laughter would brighten up any room and put smiles on everyone’s faces.
Survivors include his wife, Jan Boyd Grant; his special and loving daughter,
Audrey Grant; his step children , Charles Trautman and wife Tenly, Stephen
Trautman and wife Kim, Stanley Boyd and wife Connie, and Julie and John Fleenor;
his grandchildren, Jacqueline Trautman, Elizabeth Trautman, Julia
Trautman and Jacob Fleenor; and his step sister, Patricia Owens. In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by wives, Joyce Zeh Grant and Freda
Heaton who is the mother of Audrey. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on
Friday January 14, 2022 at the St. Matthews Episcopal Church with the Pastor
Robert Fruehwirth officiating. Burial will follow with Military Honors in the
church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4 until 6 PM on Thursday
January 13, 2022 at the McClure Funeral Home in Mebane. In lieu of flowers,
